Top Gear has returned to our UK TV with Chris Evans and Matt LeBlanc at the helm, but fans of the show turned off as it attracted its lowest opening show viewing figures in a decade and was widely panned on social media.
The show drew 4.4 million viewers, with a peak of 4.7 million, while the last series with Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May bowed out with 5.8 million viewers.
However, the BBC Two motoring show was still the most-watched programme in the 8pm time slot, beating Antiques Roadshow on BBC One and the British Soap Awards on ITV.
Evans and LeBlanc stuck to a tried and tested formula for the relaunched show and it wasn’t long before Twitter delivered its verdict.
It was one of the BBC’s biggest earners, pulling in £50 million a year and drawing the largest regular global audience for a show of its kind.
So bringing back Top Gear without hosts Jeremy Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond was always going to be a gamble and it seems producers may have been off track, as the relaunched show was widely criticised on social media.
