While those reforms slipped through almost unnoticed, the sacking of Jose Mourinho got even less attention. An all-time great manager, dismissed by a Big 6 club. It should have led news cycles for days, instead it barely registered. If a club outside the Big 6 had sacked their manager, many wouldn’t have found out until the next time they played a game. After all the weirdness though, things get back to something more normal this weekend with games to be played! There are eight Premier League matches this weekend and we thought we’d take a look at three of the most interesting to get you in the mood.

There will be no slander, such as calling Arsenal the London Reds, nor praise for Everton’s stance against the Super League they were merely upset about not being invited to. Not here. Here there will be a look ahead to Mikel Arteta facing the team he made his name with in English football against one of the best managers the game has ever seen, Carlo Ancelotti.

Arsenal’s league form has been a mixed bag this season. Four wins, four draws and four defeats from their last 12 games paints a pretty accurate picture of how things have been going. Arteta has flitted between looking like a promising young manager finding his way, and a PE teacher pressed into action when the school’s football coach was called away on other business. His naivety has cost Arsenal on multiple occasions, but his willingness to turn the keys of the kingdom over to young starlets in Bukayo Saka and Emile Smith Rowe deserves applause. Those two players, along with Gabriel Martinelli, Eddie Nketiah, Folarin Balogun and others represent the future of the club. They represent hope for a club that has been mismanaged by bad ownership for a long time. They represent hope for a return to the good times. Whatever else Arsenal do for the next five years, they need to ensure that Saka and Smith Rowe are at the heart of the team.

This weekend the Gunners will be without Alex Lacazette and Kieran Tierney, both of whom are injured and expected to miss at least another few weeks. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang should be ok to return after a bout with Malaria while there is hope that Martin Odegaard will also return from a minor injury. David Luiz could be available after a minor procedure on his knee but Arsenal are unlikely to risk him unless he is at 100% fitness.

Everton, like Arsenal, have won four, drawn four and lost four of their last 12 games, and just like Arsenal that sort of sums up their season. It’s likely to be more disappointing for Everton that they find themselves in mid-table because they had ambitions for far more this season. With a world class manager, an experienced team with some big money additions in the summer, and the boost that the picture of a stadium they’ve seen for years may actually finally be about to turn into a real stadium, they felt like a club with momentum to match the ambitions of the owners. With Liverpool in ruins due to injury, Chelsea and Tottenham suffering through poor management, and Arsenal in a rebuild, it felt like it could be the perfect season for the club best positioned to force their way into the Big 6 over the next few years to secure Champions League football and elevate themselves. Instead they’ve been plagued by injuries and inconsistency and now certain corners of the fanbase seem to be turning on Carlo Ancelotti.

The Toffees will without Jean-Phillipe Gbamin, who appears to be more of an idea than actual football player at this point, and Abdoulaye Doucoure who is unlikely to return before the season ends. Bernard, Fabian Delph and Yerry Mina are all likely to miss out as well but should be back in action soon, while Dominic Calvert Lewin and Andre Gomes will both have late fitness tests.

Few clubs had less right to take the moral high ground this week than West Ham, who’s owners would have jumped at the opportunity to join the Super League if they’d been asked. This is the club that pushed to null and void last season when they were at risk of relegation. But upon the high ground they stood, scornfully calling out clubs like the London Blues, or Chelsea as they are actually known. This weekend they’ll meet with a top four place hanging in the balance.

David Moyes is the manager of the season and nothing else needs to be discussed in that regard. Moyes has done an astonishingly good job this season. He has taken a team that were expected to struggle against relegation to the brink of a Champions League spot. The Hammers hitting an iffy run of form, especially defensively, has come at the wrong time for them. 10 goals conceded in their last four games is not what you want as you hit the business end of the season, though luckily for West Ham they have also found form in front of goal, scoring 11 in those games to come away with two wins and a draw. Seven points from 12 available isn’t ideal for a top four finish but the Hammers have overperformed all season and are capable of doing so once again to end the season. Especially if Jesse Lingard continues to perform as well as he has since arriving on loan from Manchester United.

Michail Antonio and Declan Rice are both ruled out, with doubts over whether either will play again this season while Craig Dawson is suspended after his red card against Newcastle. Arthur Masuaka and Aaron Cresswell are both doubts for this game, while Lingard will have a fitness test on a thigh issue but is expected to be passed fit.

Thomas Tuchel will likely get some mention for manager of the year, and that’s deserved. He has done an excellent job since taking over Frank Lampard. He has given Chelsea an identity, created defensive structure and patterns of play in attack. He has led to them to the Champions League semi-finals and the FA Cup final, the latter of which was managed while ending Manchester City’s hope of the quadruple. The Blues have struggled in front of goal, scoring only 26 goals in 20 games. That will be a concern to Tuchel, but with his defense conceded less than a goal every two games he knows that the odds are in his favour. If Chelsea can find more consistency upfront, and the Kai Havertz false 9 experiment really does seem promising in that regard if Tuchel can figure out what the best options either side of him are, they should secure a top four finish to cap an impressive first half-season under the German manager.

Mateo Kovacic is expected to miss out with a muscle injury while Thiago Silva is also a doubt due to muscle fatigue. These things might be positives for Chelsea as it could open more minutes for Mason Mount in central midfield, which looks like his most likely position long terms, and the defense is simply better without Silva who’s lack of pace makes him a liability.

There will be no attempts to diminish Leeds, who have taken a very haughty stance over the Super League for a club that tried to form a breakaway league while in the Championship, because Marcelo Bielsa is a true gem in world football. This weekend he will be looking to exact revenge over Manchester Reds Devils manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who inflicted the worst defeat of Leeds’ season when the two sides met at Old Trafford.

Leeds come into this game off the back of three wins and a draw against the evil Merseyside Reds. This is their longest unbeaten run of the season and has come at the perfect time for the recently promoted side who are aiming to secure a top half finish in their first season back in the top flight. Their record of won 14, lost 14 and drawn 4 speaks perfectly about Leeds this season. An all or nothing team playing high intensity football that leaves them vulnerable defensively. They have scored 50 and conceded 50, they’re fantastic going forward and fairly awful at the back. And that’s why they’re brilliant. That’s the brilliance of Bielsa, it’s all or nothing. Total commitment to an idea of how the game should be played. The return of Leeds United to the Premier League is the best thing that’s happened in many years. Mostly because of Bielsa.

There is hope that both Raphinha and Rodrigo will be available this weekend but Liam Cooper is suspended. Adam Forshaw is edging closer to putting his injury nightmare behind him. He’s now fully recovered and working his way towards fitness.

Manchester United come into this game in excellent form in the Premier League. Five wins in a row, unbeaten in 12 and unbeaten away from home all season. For whatever reason United have become a far better team away from home than at home under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. It’s genuinely impressive how good United’s results have been on their travels under the Norwegian, even when the team has played poorly as has often been the case this season. With second place as good as secured, United are merely looking to build on a season of progression. Every point earned from here on will be one more than they earned last season.

Anthony Martial and the perma-injured Phil Jones will both miss out this weekend but Eric Bailly should return after recovering from Covid-19.
