We’re down to crunch time in the Premier League. The last eight games begin this weekend with a lot to play for. At one end, the title may be all but wrapped up but there’s still at least two Champions League spots up for grabs. At the other end, Sheffield United and West Brom are likely just playing for pride at this point but there’s still a big scramble to avoid ending the season in the third seat of the train to the Championship. Fulham currently occupy that spot but Newcastle hold only a three point advantage over them and have a worse goal difference. Above the Toon there’s a three point gap to Brighton who are only one point behind Burnley. Even Wolves and Southampton have to be casting worried glances over their shoulders given their poor form since the turn of the year.

The two most entertaining teams in the league meet in the early kick off on Saturday as two of the most admired managers in world football meet on English soil for the second time. These sides met in matchweek four and played out an exciting 1-1 draw, but both have evolved quite a bit since.
For Manchester City that evolution has seen them return to form as English football’s dominant team, playing a brand of football that is breathtaking at times. The 4-3-3/3-Box-3 hybrid when they’re at full strength is a new wrinkle in Pep’s armour and invokes the Dutch influence on his views on football. Louis Van Gaal played a 4-3-3/3-Diamond-3 system for much of his time at Ajax and Barcelona, a Barcelona team that included Guardiola, and Pep has put his own spin on it. With Kevin De Bruyne and Ilkay Gundogan, the two best players in the Premier League this season, forming the advanced two in the box midfield, City have been almost unstoppable with those two interchanging with the 3 attackers in a rotating five that leaves defenders constantly out of position and confused as to how they ended up there.
City have been very fortunate with injuries this season and that remains the case. They’re expected to be at full strength this weekend.
The evolution of Leeds has had more to do with getting their players fit and on the pitch. Unlike City, Leeds have been ravaged by injuries for much of the season, especially in central defense. It makes their current league position of 11th all the more impressive in their first season back in the Premier League and it will be interesting to see how Bielsa, another manager who, at times, employs a 3-diamond-3, sets his team up to cope with City. His usual 4-1-4-1 seems most likely as he will hope that outnumbering City in midfield can nullify some of their movement and creativity.
The only Leeds players confirmed out this weekend are Jack Harrison, who is owned by City, and Adam Forshaw who hasn’t played all season.

Fourth vs third in our second game of the weekend, the surprise packet of the season taking on a team who are making the right moves to establish themselves as a regular top four challenger. Both West Ham and Leicester have done brilliantly to capitalise on the messes that Chelsea, Tottenham, Liverpool and Arsenal have made of their seasons and could yet both end up claiming Champions League spots for themselves.
The Hammers have massively over performed this season, and all credit for that must go to David Moyes. Moyes must surely be the overwhelming favourite to win Manager of the Year considering that pre-season predictions for his side saw them battled relegation this season. Written off by many as finished after failed spells at Manchester United, Real Sociedad and Sunderland, Moyes has rediscovered what made him such a good manager at Everton and West Ham are reaping the rewards. The January addition of Jesse Lingard has proved inspired but the recent injury to Declan Rice is going to be very tough to overcome. The pairing of Rice and Soucek in midfield has been the basis for West Ham’s form this season and while Mark Noble is still a game competitor, he’s not longer a Premier League calibre midfielder.
West Ham will be without Rice, Angelo Ogbonna, Andriy Yarmolenko and Darren Randolph this weekend, while Michail Antonio is a major doubt with a hamstring issue.
While many are shocked at Leicester’s place in the top four, they really shouldn’t be. Brendan Rodgers has a top four calibre squad at his disposal and with Chelsea, Tottenham, Liverpool and Arsenal all struggling so badly, they were next in line to jump in and secure the Champions League spot they should have got last year. That’s not to say Leicester have had it easy, they’ve had to cope with a lot of injuries to important players but Rodgers has used his squad very well and altered his set up to suit the players he has available to him on a given matchday. They have the toughest final run-in of any team challenging for a top four spot, so it’s imperative that they pick up as many points in the next few games as possible.
Leicester will be without Harvey Barnes, James Justin and Wes Morgan but are hopeful that Cengiz Under and Caglar Soyuncu will be available again after having to sit out following their exposure to Covid-19 while away on international duty with Turkey.

You may have expected to find Tottenham vs Manchester United in this spot but who wants to read about multiple buses being parked by both managers as the two teams set out not to lose, rather than to try and win. Instead, it’s Brighton vs Everton. Two teams that will be slightly disappointed with their seasons after beginning with such high expectations.
Brighton’s problem’s have been largely of their own making. Their failure to convert chances has cost them countless points over the season, and left them still with work to do in order to secure another season in the Premier League. They’ve played some sparkling football, and do have plenty of talented players at their disposal but none of that matters if you can’t put the ball in the opponents net. Defeats to Crystal Palace and West Brom epitomised where they have fallen short this season. Both sides were absolutely dominated, and had their goal peppered for 90 minutes, but the Seagulls just couldn’t put the ball in the net. It’s the main area they simply must address this summer.
This weekend they will be without Tariq Lamptey, who is out for the season, along with Solly March and Florian Andone. Adam Webster, Aaron Connolly, Percy Tau, and Dan Burn will all have fitness tests, with all bar Webster rated as better than a 50/50 chance for involvement.
Everton are one of the more confusing teams in the league this season. They can flit from good to bad and back within a half of football, let alone game to game. Carlo Ancelotti is still very early in his rebuild there, and this Everton team likely isn’t close to what he aims for them to eventually become. After looking like potential Champion League qualifiers at Christmas, it now looks probably that they might miss out on European football altogether. That would be a big let down because European football is going to be important in securing the types of players Ancelotti will be aiming to recruit. The good news for Everton this weekend is that they’ve been substantially better away from home than at home this season so three points is a distinct possibility.
Like their hosts this weekend The Toffees are currently suffering badly from injuries. Jordan Pickford, Bernard, Fabian Delph and Abdoulaye Doucoure are all ruled out, while Andre Gomes, Allan and Alex Iwobi are all doubts.
