So far on the tour the Lions have played five games, and won four. They defeated Japan 28-10 in a warm-up at Murrayfield before departing for South Africa. Once there the Lions of Britain and Ireland defeated the Lions of Gauteng 56-14 in Ellis Park Stadium, Johannesburg before defeating the Sharks of KwaZulu-Natal 54-7 four days later at the same stadium. Three days later, same opponents at a different venue the Lions once again triumphed by a scoreline of 71-31 at Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria. Four games in, four victories on the board and all was going well.
Until they went to Cape Town to face the South Africa A side in what was seen as the true warm-up before the first test. South Africa A surprised the Lions, winning 17-13 at the Cape Town Stadium in a tight game that brought forward some of the deficiencies in this Lions selection and left both players and selectors feeling frustrated. The Cape Town Stadium will host the first test against the Springboks on the 24th of July before the Lions return to Johannesburg for the second and third tests. In a controversial move, those second and third tests will be held at the FNB Stadium, better known as Soccer City, rather than at historic Ellis Park which is the true home of South African Rugby. That parked to one side for a second, the Lions will get another chance to get used to the Cape Town Stadium, again a football stadium being used instead of the wonderful Newlands Stadium, when they take on the Stormers of the Western Cape on Saturday at 5pm UK time.
The Stormers, like the Lions and the Sharks, as well as the Bulls of Pretoria, will all become much better known to us all over the next few years with the United Rugby Championship set to kick-off in September. The successor to the Pro14, this 16 team tournament has a real chance to set the standard for club Rugby on a club scale.
For now, the Stormers will take on the Lions and may well be lambs to the slaughter after the defeat to South Africa A and the need to be up to speed before next weekend’s test match.
The Lions tour is not the only Rugby on this weekend as the summer international series is also underway. New Zealand will take on Fiji at 8.05am UK time at the FMG Stadium in Waikato, Australia host France at 11am at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane and finally Wales meet Argentina at 3pm at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff.

There is a fair and reasonable argument to be made that the Lions tour is not the biggest thing currently happening in sports, and that is that The Open is underway! One of golf’s Big Four, and now the final one of the season after the PGA Championship moved to May back in 2019, the Open is one of the great sporting events of the year. Taking place this year at the Royal St. George’s Golf Club in Kent, the tournament has been the sight of some memorial moments including Tiger Woods winning three of his 15 Majors.
Last years tournament was cancelled due to Covid, the first time since World War 2 brought global sport to a stop that it had not taken place, but 2019 winner Shane Lowry, 2018 winner Francesco Molinari and 2017 Champion Jordan Spieth are all part of this field and hoping to add a second Open to their resumes. Spieth has made a great start through two rounds, but Lowry has work to do if he is to contend. Molinari looks set to miss the cut after two rounds unfortunately.

After the madness of UFC 264 last weekend and the ramifications of Conor McGregor’s broken leg and behaviour, Dana White will be hoping for a quieter weekend with UFC on ESPN: Makhachev vs. Moisés.
This card was meant to feature Max Holloway vs Jair Rodriguez in what could have been a fight of the year contender but with Holloway injured, the lightweight contest between 19-1 Islam Makhachev and 15-4 Thiago Moises will serve as the headliner. Makhachev is a disciple of Khabib and employs a similarly dominant style. He comes into the fight on a seven fight win streak and knows that a win here will push him right into title contention. Moises will be no pushover and has one his last three in a row but it is noteworthy that he was beaten by Damir Ismagulov who employs a similar fighting style to Makhachev.
In the co-main event of the evening, former UFC women’s Bantamweight Champion Meisha Tate returns to the ring after a near five year retirement to take on cagey veteran Marion Reneau. Tate is a true OG of the women’s fight game having made her debut in 2007 and been one of the true pioneers of the sport.

Lots of gold is on the line in San Antonio this Saturday as Jermell Charlo, the reigning WBA, IBF, WBC and Ring Magazine Champion, puts his belts on the line against WBO title holder Brian Castano with all the belts on the line in this unification bout. Charlo is the undisputed top fighter in the division and he will look to make that official by unifying all the belts this Saturday.
Coming into the fight with a 34-1 record, Charlo has recorded three straight KO wins after suffering the first defeat of his career to Tony Harrison. Harrison was one of those he defeated by KO as he got revenge, and regained the WBC title he had lost to his fellow American.
Castano holds a 17-0-1 record, with the draw coming against Erislandy Lara who is arguably the best fighter the Argentine has faced. Castano has decent KO power and is a skilled fighter but there’s little doubt that Charlo represents a big step up in class for him.
On the undercard, the interim WBA Lightweight title will be on the line as 13-0 Rolando Romero puts his title on the line against Anthony Yigit. Romero was meant to face 14-2 Austin Dulay but Dulay was forced to withdraw due to a knee injury. Yigit, 24-1-1, has stepped up from the undercard on short notice to fill in.

It’s a lowkey week in Tennis without a Grand Slam event but there is still quality action taking place on both the ATP and WTA tours.

The 2021 World Matchplay begins on Saturday with many of the worlds top players set to be part of the field. 2020 winner Dimitri Van den Bergh is one of five former Champions set to take part in the 28th edition of one of Darts’ biggest events. The Phoenix Suns will host the Milwaukee Bucks in a pivotal Game 5 of the NBA finals with the series tied at 2-2.
