There’s a full round of Premier League games on, so as usual we’ve gone ahead and previewed three for you which can be read right here. We’ve also previewed the FA Cup semi-finals, which can be read here.
Looking around the big five leagues, it’s definitely a bit more promising than last weekend and we would suggest that the pick of the games from each of the top five leagues looks something like this:
Ligue 1 – Lille vs Montpellier on Friday at 8.00pm
Lille sit top of the league having beaten PSG a couple of weeks ago to retake the lead in the title race. Tonight they welcome Montpellier to the Stade Pierre Mauroy as they look to maintain their three point advantage over the defending Champions. There are only six games left in the season and Lille will know that this game and next week’s game against Lyon are the two toughest games left on their schedule. They will be hoping that Jonathan David can get them the goals over the next few weeks to make the excellent, season-long, play of their midfield and defense title worthy.
Montpellier were the last team to win the French League before PSG’s dominance began, and are therefore one of only three teams to win the title in the past decade along with PSG and the Mbappe-inspired Monaco team that triumphed in 2016/17. Currently sitting 8th in the table, Montpellier are still in the mix for a Europa Conference League but their best chance of European football for next season may come from the Coupe de France where they face a quarter-final tie against 4th tier Canet Roussillon on Tuesday. Might they rest some players this weekend, ahead of that cup match?
Bundesliga – Borussia Monchengladbach vs Eintracht Frankfurt on Saturday at 2.30pm
The Adi Hutter Derby! A game of football overseen by two managers who already know they will not be managing the same clubs next season and one, Eintracht boss Hutter, who knows that he will be standing in the opposite dugout when the teams meet next season. Hutter has agreed to walk away from Frankfurt, and what appears like certain Champions League football next season to replace Marco Rose, who has agreed to join Borussia Dortmund next season, at Gladbach who seem unlikely to secure any European football next season.
Currently in 8th position, Gladbach’s form and top four challenge fell apart when it was announced that Rose had decided to move on this summer. They have turned things around a little bit of late with two wins and a draw in their last three but they’ve likely left themselves with just a bit too much to do for a European spot. Nonetheless, they are an entertaining side managed by a Jurgen Klopp disciple.
Hutter, like Rose, is a former Red Bull Salzburg manager and has a similar ideology to his opponent this weekend. He has done a fantastic job since taking over at Frankfurt. His team sit seven points clear of Borussia Dortmund with just six games remaining and the supporters and hierarchy of Die Adler will all be hoping that the announcement of his impending departure doesn’t have the same effect that the Rose announcement had on Gladbach. With star striking Andre Silva having a career year and a resurgent Luka Jovic in tandem with him, Eintracht have one of the more potent frontlines in Europe right now.
La Liga – Real Sociedad vs Sevilla on Sunday at 1.00pm
Fifth placed La Real play host to 4th placed Sevilla in a game that should showcase some of the best played football in Europe this weekend. La Real are currently level on points with Sevilla’s city rivals Real Betis and just one point ahead of Villareal so they don’t have much room for error if they are to secure European football for next season.
With an attack built around the brilliant Mikel Oyarzabal and the promising Alexander Isak, aided by genius playmaker David Silva, the team from San Sebastian have been one of most eye-catching teams in Spain’s top division this season, and last. Oyarzabal is the one to keep a close eye on as he figures to be on the wanted list of most of England’s top clubs this summer.
Sevilla are comfortable in 4th, holding a 14 point advantage over those below them and possessing their own star players. In Jules Kounde they have one of the best young defenders in world football, and in Youssef En-Nesyri they possess a fantastic number 9 who’s well rounded game has already drawn attention from West Ham and others ahead of the summer transfer window.
Serie A – Napoli vs Inter Milan – Sunday at 7.45pm
Inter may be 11 points clear at the top and looking unstoppable in their march towards the title but there’s still plenty to play for in Serie A with just 9 points separating 2nd and 7th with eight games still to play. Napoli are currently in 5th and despite their 2-1 defeat to Juventus a couple of weeks they are a team in good form. Six wins and a draw from their last seven games has left them in a good position to secure a top 4 finish and a place in next season’s Champions League. Despite constant speculation around his job, Gennaro Gattuso has done very well with Napoli this season, especially given the injuries and Covid-19 issues the team have had.
Inter do look unstoppable and have won 11 games in a row in Serie A, as part of a 14 game unbeaten run. Having sat 2nd in the table for much of the season, they reached the summit in mid-February and haven’t looked back. The gap between them and the rest just continues to grow with each passing week, and each fantastic performance by Romelu Lukaku. Lukaku is in the form of his life under Antonio Conte and his unhappy spell at Manchester United seems a distant memory. Conte was brought to Inter to win the title and in only his second year, he’s about to do just that. It will be the 5th title of his managerial career after three at Juventus and one with Chelsea, but this may be the sweetest of all. This is his team, built by him and for him. They play to his instruction and the beat of his drum. His place among the elite in world management is secure, though next season he will want to make a bigger impact on the Champions League than he has in the past.

It’s a quiet weekend in Rugby for a change. It’s back to domestic action and with the Pro14 between seasons, it’s just Gallagher Premiership action on the cards.
Starting Friday night at 7.45pm, Northampton take on London Irish before a hectic Saturday that see Sale vs Gloucester and Exeter vs Wasps at 12.30pm, followed by Harlequins vs Worcester and Newcastle vs Bristol at 5pm. Bath vs Leicester in a 3pm kickoff is the only game on Sunday. As usual, all games will be shown on BT Sport.
There is international action in the form of the Women’s Six Nations with two matches taking place on Satuday. In Group B, Ireland take on France at 2.15pm while Group A offers up Scotland vs Italy at 5pm. Both games are available on the BBC iPlayer.

There’s events from both major MMA organisations this weekend with the UFC and Bellator both putting on quality fight cards. The UFC event runs Saturday, while Bellator have opted not to counter-program and will hold their event tonight, Friday.
UFC on ESPN: Whittaker vs. Gastelum is the UFC’s offering and pits former Middleweight Champion Robert Whittaker against Kelvin Gastelum is a battle of the heavy hitters. Between the pair they should produce an enthralling fight. Neither will want this one to go to the ground. They’ll want to plant their feet and throw big bombs. Both men lost to Israel Adesanya in title fights as the Stylebender took the division as his own, but both have bounced back and come into this fight off wins. Two confident fighters who want to finish the fight should make for an action packed contest.
On the undercard former Heavyweight Champion Andrei Arlovski, who has 17 KO wins and 11 KO defeats in his 52 career fights, takes on Chase Sherman who only knows one way to win fights. By smashing people. This should be a really fun fight, while it lasts.
Bellator 257 takes place tonight and is headlined by a Light Heavyweight title fight between Vadim Nemkov, who makes the first defence of the title he took from Ryan Bader, and Phil Davis. This is a rematch of their November 2018 fight which saw Nemkov prevail by split decision. Davis has won three in a row since that night, with his last win coming in a split decision over Lyoto Machida in September. Nemkov looked terrifying when he destroyed Bader back in August and will be aiming for another performance of that level against the veteran wrestler.
The co-main event sees former UFC veteran Corey Anderson taking on Dovletdzhan Yagshimuradov in another Light Heavyweight contest. Yagshimuradov is a mystery to most outside of hardcore MMA fans but if he’s as hard to fight against, as his name is to pronounce then Anderson is in for a long night.

It’s actually a busy weekend for Boxing with multiple events worth keeping an eye out for.
Former Light-Middleweight Champion Tony Harrison returns to the ring after an 18 month absence to take on Bryant Perrella as he looks to work his way back into the world title picture.
The biggest fight of the weekend sees WBO Middleweight Champion Demetrius Andrade put his title on the line against Britain’s Liam Williams as part of a card that also features an IBO World Super Middleweight fight between Christopher Pearson and the dangerous Carlos Gongora.
The card will likely attract the most eyeballs is headlined by the 18-5 Ivan Redkach taking on the former WBA Light-Welterweight Champion Regis Prograis. While that fight might not seem reason for a likely 1,000,000 pay per view buys, the undercard features some “interesting” fighters with former UFC Heavyweight Champion Frank Mir making his professional boxing debut, taking on former Cruiserweight Champion Steve Cunningham in a six round Heavyweight clash.
The main reason people will buy this card though involves another former UFC fighter. Ben Askren, best known to many for the spectacular knockout he suffered at the hands of Jorge Masvidal, also makes his pro-boxing debut taking on Youtuber turned boxer Jake Paul. Paul is 2-0 in pro-boxing after a one fight amatuer career where he beat up KSI’s little brother Deji, another Youtuber. As a professional he has KO’d AnEson Gib, another Youtuber, and Nate Robinson, a basketball player. Paul is an extremely unpopular individual but has amassed a massive following with over 20 million subscribers on Youtube and many more millions of followers on social media. Most people will tune in, in the hope that Ben Askren can silence him once and for all. Paul has the better pedigree but Askren is a career fighter and will give him a far tougher test than previous opponents.

Corey Connors and former winner Stewart Cink are the early leaders as they undertake their second round today.

The 2021 World Snooker Championship starts on Saturday at the legendary Crucible Theatre in Sheffield. The world’s best players are all on hand with Ronny O’Sullivan, Judd Trump, Mark Selby and Neil Robertson the four favourites to claim the title. Those four, along with Mark Williams, John Higgins and Shaun Murphy make up seven World Champions in the field this year. In fact, only Graham Dott and Peter Ebdon are missing from the field from the players who have won the World title since the year 2000. Dott was eliminating in qualifying and Ebdon retired last year. With O’Sullivan and Selby in the top half of the draw, and Robertson and Trump in the bottom half, the stage is set for potential semi-final showdowns between the big four thought three time Champion Williams, and four time winner Higgins will both have their eyes set on upsetting the applecart.

Injuries are the talk of the NBA right now. First it was Joel Embiid, then Anthony Davis, then LeBron and finally James Harden. One by one MVP contenders fell victim to time on the sidelines leaving Nikola Jokic as the favourite to claim the award. However, Jokic must now navigate the rest of the season and the playoffs without his team-mate Jamal Murray. Murray, the second star of the Denver Nuggets, tore his ACL during the week and will be out for between 9 and 11 months. That almost certainly ends the Nuggets hopes of winning a title this year, and probably next year too. It will be a massive test of Jokic’s MVP credentials to carry this team rest of the way.
There’s plenty of good games scheduled this weekend with the pick of them being:
- Friday: Jazz vs Pacers, 76ers vs Clippers, Bulls vs Grizzlies
- Saturday: Lakers vs Jazz, Celtics vs Warriors, Bucks vs Grizzlies
- Sunday: Hawks vs Pacers, Nets vs Heat, Hornets vs Trail Blazers
