Taylor’s talented extended to other sports as well, she was a promising Gaelic Footballer, adapt at Hurling and excelled at cross country running. Whatever she turned her hand to, she succeeded at.

She followed her passion for Boxing, under the tutelage of her father Peter, and five World Amateur Championships, six European Amateur Champions, five EU Championships and an Olympic Gold Medal at the 2012 Games in London. She established herself as the finest female boxer on the planet, while still an amateur. Her run of success was unmatched, her dominance was unlike anything seen before or since.

Since turning professional, Taylor has continued to develop as a fighter and she has enjoyed incredible success. After winning her first World title in just her seventh fight, she has gone on to add four more in her last 10 fights to become the undisputed Lightweight Champion of the world. She has rarely been troubled outside of her first meeting with the brilliant Delfine Persoon who pushed her to the limit. Taylor made adjustments for their rematch and out-boxed her opponent so comprehensively that even Persoon admitted that Taylor had clearly won the fight.

So dominant has Taylor been at Lightweight that she even took time out between the Persoon fights to move up to Junior Welterweight and take the WBO title in that weight class from Christina Linardatou. In her last fight she dominated the game but outmatched Miriam Gutierrez to retain her Lightweight titles and status as the number one female boxer in the world.

On the undercard of that fight with Gutierrez was a contest between Super Featherweight Champion Terri Harper and Natasha Jonas. The fight ended in a draw with many feeling that Jonas should have been given the decision. Immediately after the event, Jonas issued a challenge to Taylor which Taylor was more than happy to accept.

Jonas will provide a tough test for Taylor with her southpaw stance and counter attacking style of fighting. Like Taylor, Jonas would be a professional footballer if she wasn’t a boxer and due to her participation in multiple sports as a youngster she has fantastic cardio. Jonas has stated that she believes she has seen weaknesses in Taylor’s game that she can exploit and while all fighters engage in such brinksmanship before fights, Jonas truly seems to believe that she may have a chance at cracking the Taylor Code. Having failed to take home the titles in her first World title effort against Harper, Jonas will not want to let another opportunity slip so it can be expected that she will come into this fight in the best condition of her career with a game plan and plenty of studying of her opponent in her back pocket.

For Taylor though, this fight is about more than defending her titles. This fight is about continuing to build on her legacy, and continuing to change the sport of women’s Boxing for the better. Taylor’s profile has already elevated the sport substantially, including in terms of payment. Taylor became the first woman to ever earn over £1million for a fight. She was the first woman to headline a pay-per-view event. She has broken down barriers and allowed the rest of the field to follow her. Simply being on the same card as Taylor means a bigger payday now. Having your name opposite hers on the dance card? That’s worth roughly three times what any female boxer earned for a single fight before Taylor turned professional. Katie Taylor has changed the game. In many ways, Katie Taylor IS the game right now.

While she won’t be looking beyond Jonas, it’s hard not to imagine that bigger fights are on the horizon. Perhaps a rematch with Jessica McCaskill will be next? Taylor outpointed McCaskill in a commanding performance in 2017 but the American has since moved up to Welterweight and become the undisputed Champion of that weight class. Or what about a dream match-up with Cecilia Braekhus who dominated the landscape of women’s boxing for almost a decade before Taylor turned professional. Braekhus was undefeated through 36 fights across 12 years until she lost back to back contests with McCaskell. Amanda Serrano, the best Featherweight on the planet, has been talked about as a potential opponent for Taylor, and that would also be a dream match-up given the Puerto Rican’s standing in the sport.

The two “biggest” fights for Taylor from a financial point of view are the least likely. Cris Cyborg, the MMA fighter, has often talked about crossing over into Boxing and Taylor has said she would be open to the fight but there has been little mention of it in over a year now. The other is Clarissa Shields. If there is one woman who can challenge Taylor’s claim as the top female Boxer on the planet, it’s Shields. An undisputed Champion at two weight classes, Shields is also a two time Olympic Gold medalist. A fight between them would break records in terms of PPV buys, ticket demands and purse bids but given Shields fights four weight classes above Taylor, it seems unlikely the two will ever meet.

There’s still plenty for Taylor to look towards if she overcomes Jonas though, and continuing to build her legacy is part of that. That’s what this fight is about for her, cementing herself as the best. Not just the best now, but the best ever. The best boxer, the best sportsperson her country has ever produced. The country that she has made so proud time and again will be behind her once again on Saturday night.

As Conor McGregor once said, “When one of us goes to war, we all go to war”. When fans are allowed back into venues, Taylor’s fans will continue to show the world how true that is.
