In the week that news broke that Danny Ings might be looking to engineer a move away from Southampton as he seeks Champions League football, the Saints overcame Shrewsbury in their re-arranged 3rd round tie to set up this game against Arsenal. The two teams are well matched as 9th and 10th in the Premier League, though Saints do have a game in hand to go with their two point advantage.
These teams played five weeks ago in the Premier League and the game ended in a 1-1 draw during which Arsenal played the last half hour with 10 men after Gabriel was sent off for a second bookable offence. That game began a four game stretch without a win for Saints that ended with their 1-0 win over Liverpool. Leicester beat them 2-0 at the weekend, before they eased past Shrewsbury in mid-week.
Arsenal lost their first two matches after that draw with the Saints and pressure began to mount on Mikel Arteta before he turned to the supremely talented Emile Smith Rowe and Bakayo Saka to transform his attack. And transform it they have. Arsenal are an unrecognisable team right now, full of inventiveness and purpose who’ve rattled off five wins and a draw in their last six, including a 2-0 win over Newcastle in the third round of the Cup.
This is a game that will be decided by which team is able to establish their style of play within the game quickest. Will the Gunners, with the added power of Thomas Partey back in midfield, be able to carve Southampton apart with their quick passing, clever movement and inventive dribbling? Or will Southampton be able to use their pressing and counter pressing to force turnovers and put the Gunners on the back foot and expose the fragility that remains in the Arsenal backline?
This should be an entertaining game between two good footballing sides, with a 5th round tie against the winner of Chorley vs Wolves the prize.

Two of the best run clubs in English football will face off when Leicester travel to London to take on the Bees in the Battle of the Recruitment Nerds! Brentford are famed for their use of analytics and their ability to find bargains, develop and then sell them on while never really seeming to miss the player as they leave. James Tarkowski, Ezri Konsa, Ollie Watkins and Said Benrahma are all ex-Brentford players currently excelling in the Premier League. Leicester’s recruitment over the past four years speaks for itself, take a look at their team and then remember that the sold Harry Maguire for 80mil and then Ben Chilwell for 50mil, and got better both times.
Brentford have seemingly decided that they’re taking all competitions seriously this season and are having an excellent season across the board. They made it to the semi-finals of EFL Cup before losing 2-0 to Spurs, and are currently in 4th position in the Championship and have won their last four league matches on the bounce. They knocked out Middlesbrough to reach this stage and will be relying on star man Ivan Toney, who has 16 goals already this season, to fire them into the 5th round.
After the terrible disappointment that was the second half of the 2019/20 season, Leicester have put together a fantastic first half of the 2020/21. What’s more impressive than their start, and their current 3rd place in the Premier League, is that they’ve done it while not having their two best defenders available. Caglar Soyuncu and Ricardo Pereira are both back to full fitness now though and Leicester’s squad has quality everywhere. The put a 4-0 slapping on Stoke in the 3rd round and Brendan Rodgers may well decide to go with a very strong team this weekend as he chases his first silverware in English football.
You’d be hard pressed to find a game between two more exciting teams to watch this weekend. Both teams will go for it, and the winner will go forward to face the winner of Brighton vs Blackpool.

Didn’t these teams play just last weekend? Yes, they didn’t.

United are top of the Premier League and one of the form teams in Europe at the minute. As Bruno Fernandes suffers his first real dip in form since joining United, Paul Pogba has come up with match-winning goals against Burnley and Fulham in two of their last three games. United edged past Watford to advance to this stage of the cup and the big question for them is whether Ole goes with a strong team or rotates in order to keep his players fresh for the league.
Liverpool are in their worst patch under Klopp and sit 4th in the table, six points behind United have failed to win in their last five league matches, and tallying zero goals in the last four of them. The absence of Virgil Van Dijk, their best and most important player who is also the leader and organiser of the team, is being felt more with each passing game. Fabinho has done brilliantly standing in for him, but he is being massively missed in midfield. The Reds did beat the Aston Villa Under 18s in the third round of the Cup when the first team squad were struck down by Covid. Klopp hasn’t taken the Cup seriously in previous years, but it may represent his best chance of silverware this season so expect Liverpool to field a strong team.
This game has to be more exciting than their Premier League, purely on the basis that it couldn’t be any more boring! The winner of West Ham vs Doncaster awaits the victor so both sides could well fancy themselves as favourites to advance to the 6th round.
