The headline bout is a Light-Heavyweight title fight between defending Champion Jan Blachowicz and Middleweight Champion Israel Adesanya who is stepping up in weight aiming to become the eighth person to win UFC titles in multiple weight divisions, and the fifth to hold them at the same time.
Randy Couture, BJ Penn, Conor McGregor, Georges St-Pierre, Daniel Cormier, Amanda Nunes and Henry Cejudo have previously accomplished the feat of winning titles in two different weight classes, while McGregor, Cormier, Nunes and Cejudo have stepped up a weight as Champion to win their second title. It used to be unusual, for years Couture and Penn were the only two who had accomplished the feat along with Dan Henderson who managed it in Pride. Then along came McGregor and it was off to the races. Superfights became the order of the day and everyone wanted to move weight classes in search of additional gold.
Adesanya has had a spectacular rise in the UFC winning all nine of his fights inside the Octagon, and carries a 20-0 record and likely the backing of the bookies into the cage this weekend. Known for his incredible striking which combines pinpoint accuracy with lightning speed, Adesanya has not been shy about his ambitions for being considered the best the sport has ever seen and a win on Saturday night will go a long way towards putting him in that conversation. His run through the very best Middleweights in the world has included breathtaking finishes of Kelvin Gastelum, Robert Whittaker and most recently Paulo Costa.
He can’t afford to overlook Blachowicz though, as the Polish veteran brings a wealth of experience and fantastic cardio to the contest. Considered as little more than a rough, tough gatekeeper/journeyman type for most of his career, Blachowicz comes into this fight riding a four fight win streak that has seen him bounce back from KO defeat to Thiago Santos and go on to earn a KO victory over Luke Rockhold, before outworking Jacare Souza to a split decision, and then knocking out Corey Anderson to earn himself a title fight against Dominik Reyes after Jon Jones vacated his crown in order to retire. Reyes was a heavy favourite going into the fight, but the Pole finished him with a flourish of punches to earn his first UFC title.
The first of the two co-main events of the evening will see Amanda Nunes, undisputedly the greatest women’s fighter in the history of Mixed Martial Arts. put one of her titles on the line. Nunes is in an elite club of two, the other being Daniel Cormier, who has not only held titles in two weight divisions at the same time but actually defended both. And unlike Cormier, Nunes seems to have no plans to vacate either title. This will be her second defense of her Featherweight title, won by destroying Cris Cyborg back in December of 2018. It’s worth noting that the UFC only operates four weight classes for women, and along with holding titles in two of them Nunes also holds two victories over Flyweight Champion Valentina Shevchenko which further cements her place as the GOAT of the women’s ranks.
She will put the Featherweight belt on the line against the tough, rangy Aussie Megan Anderson who will have a significant height and reach advantage over Nunes and could present the Champion with some problems she’s yet to experience inside the Octagon. Anderson, a former Invicta FC Featherweight Champion initially struggled after signing with the UFC. She lost two of her first three fights and was mentioned as someone who cut face getting cut from the promotion if her performances didn’t improve. She’s bounced back with successive wins, including a Performance of the Night winning KO victory over Norma Dumont Viana in her last fight to earn a title shot. This fight was initially meant to take place in December but an injury to Nunes forced it’s rescheduling. Anderson will be a big underdog going into the fight, but she seems to prefer that role and if she performs to her very best she might just pull off one of the biggest upsets in UFC history against a fighter who has looked unbeatable in recent years.
The third and final title fight comes in the Men’s Bantamweight division as reigning Champion Petr Yan defends the belt he won by knocking out Jose Aldo against Aljamain Sterling who brings a six fight win streak into this fight and earned his shot at the gold by choking out Corey Sandhagen last June.
Yan is 7-0 in the UFC, 15-1 overall, and hasn’t looked troubled at all since making his promotional debut in June 2018. His last two victories, over all time legends in Aldo and Urijah Faber, have seen his profile in the sport explode and elevate him into the best pound-for-point discussion. That’s exactly what this division needed when Henry Cejudo decided to retire. With an eye-catching striking style that combines Boxing and Muay Thai, Yan is one of the most exciting fighters in the UFC and is rumoured to want to follow in the footsteps of Nunes, Adesanya et al and step up in weight to challenge Featherweight Champion Alexander Volkanovski in the near future.
Aljamain Sterling will want to put an end to those sort of thoughts though, and isn’t taking part on Saturday just to make up the numbers. Sterling, a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt under Matt Serra, is in the best form of his career and has been extremely impressive during his winning streak with his win over Sandhagen coming as a surprise to many who viewed Sandhagen as a certain future Champion. Sterling’s grappling is his key to victory as he most definitely does not want to engage in a striking contest with Yan.
The undercard for this fight is just as stacked as the top of it with former Light-Heavyweight challenger Thiago Santos looking to get back to winning ways against Aleksander Rakic, Khabib disciple Islam Makhachev taking on cagey veteran Drew Dober, and former Bantamweight King Dominick Cruz returning to the cage against grappling specialist Casey Kenney.
From top to bottom, this one has Card of the Year written all over it. Fireworks are guaranteed and there’s no such thing as too many title fights. For only the seventh time in history a UFC card will feature three title fights. Each of the previous six has seen at least one new Champion crowned, and UFC 217 saw all three titles change hands.
