Kerry and Tyrone had been due to face each other the same weekend as the Mayo-Dublin semi-final but a Covid outbreak in the Tyrone camp threw the game into doubt and had it not been for the sporting nature of the Kerry team, the Ulster Champions might well have been forced to forfeit the game and lose out on the chance to compete for Sam in the Final. The rescheduling of the game has, of course, meant that the All Ireland Final which had been scheduled for this weekend has been pushed back until September 11th. All things considered the GAA have manager to navigate this season very well with this being the first Championship match to fall victim to the pandemic but luckily they had given themselves enough of a window that pushing the Final back a couple of weeks doesn’t impact anything else, allowing Tyrone the opportunity to recover and take their place opposite Kerry for an opportunity to take on Mayo, the conquerors of Dublin.
Mayo’s victory was historic, and surprising. They ended Dublin’s stranglehold on the All Ireland Championship and gave themselves another opportunity to bring Sam home. They now get the benefit of a couple of extra weeks rest to put their feet up and wait on the Champions of Munster and Ulster to do battle.
Kerry and Tyrone have met seven times in Championship play before this weekend, with Kerry holding a 4-3 advantage. Meetings between the counties have become more frequent in the past 20 as the rise of Ulster football coincided with the greatest team in Tyrone’s history. Have played just once in the previous 100 plus years of the Championship, the sides have met six times at semi-final or final stage in the last 20.
Those six meetings have been divided three apiece with Tyrone winning all three in the 2000s, and Kerry winning the three in the 2010s. We’ll find out who gains the upper hand for the 2020s this Sunday but both teams will be desperate to advance and have the chance to win the Sam Maguire Cup.
Kerry won the last of their record 37 All Ireland Championships in 2014, in a place where Football stands above everything else that is completely unacceptable and the seven year wait for another represents only the third time in the 98 years since they won their first that they have gone six or more years without bringing Sam for a spin around the Ring of Kerry. Manager Peter Keane was seen as rather fortunate to keep his job after last season’s disastrous campaign that saw them fail to reach the Munster Final, and while this is only his third year in the job he knows he won’t get much more time to end the drought. The Kingdom doesn’t just expect success, it demands success.
The Red Hands don’t have Kerry’s great history of success but there can be no doubt that they have become a force to be reckoned with over the past 20 years. With three All Ireland titles in the 00s, they were the second best team of the decade behind only Kerry, the team they overcame to win it all in both 2005 and 2008.

GAA games for the 2021 season will be streamed live on the RTE Player website, as well as their respective apps for iPhone, iPad, Android, Smart TV, Now TV, FireTV etc.
