Friday Night Football is always good. And rivalry matches are always good. Brighton and Crystal Palace isn’t a Derby, but it is a proper rivalry. One that has given us a couple of absolutely cracking games with late drama over the past few seasons.

Brighton are having a really strange season. They currently sit 9th in the Premier League but following their win over Leicester City on September 19th they failed to win a single league game until a December 26th win over Brentford. 11 games without a win would be catastrophic for many teams but due to Brighton’s quality defence they managed to avoid defeat in eight of those games. That enabled them to stay in the mid-table mix, and as Christmas passed they found winning form again. They have won two of their last three, and claimed a draw over Chelsea in between the two draws to climb back to ninth place. Once again, Brighton are hamstrung by their own inability to score goals. It surely must be top priority for Graham Potter in this window, and the summer, to add goal scorers to his team. Brighton do everything well, bar scoring goals, and Potter must address it.

Year one of the Patrick Vieira is going better than anyone can possibly have expected it to so far. After a summer of turnover, with the playing squad experiencing a lot of change and a new manager with no experience in the Premier League arriving to take charge, the mandate for Palace was very simple. Stay in the division. They’ve gone well above and beyond that, currently sitting 12th in the table only two points behind 10th placed Leicester. There is so much for Palace to be excited by, with Michael Olise looking like a potential star after arriving in the summer, and last season’s star attraction Eberechi Eze has returned from a torn achilles to provide a further boost for Patrick Vieira. Palace are playing exciting football, for the first time in many years, and having been one to avoid for many years, they are now approaching must watch most weeks. They’ll want to right what they felt was a wrong which occurred earlier this season. When the sides met back in September Palace thought they had the game won, before Neal Maupay equalised in the 95th minute. Brighton will view it as payback for what happened when the sides met last season at the Amex, so perhaps they have evened things up already.

⚽ Manchester City vs Chelsea
📅 Saturday 15 January 2022
⏰ 1230 UK Kick-Off
🖥️ BT Sport Live Streaming

It may well be that the Premier League title race is over before it ever had a chance to really get started but if there is still any real potential for someone to catch Manchester City this season, then Chelsea simply have to take three points at the Etihad this weekend.

City have rattled off 11 straight wins in the Premier League and opened a ten point lead on Chelsea who sit in second place. Pep Guardiola’s team have really started to hum as we hit the midpoint of the season with the carousel of movement in attack in full flow just as it was last season when a similar run of form saw them come on after Christmas and run away with the title. They haven’t had it all their own way this season but as Liverpool and Chelsea stumbled and dropped points, City found consistency and might well have killed off any challenges to their attempts to retain the Premier League title. City will be without Riyad Mahrez this weekend but may well have Phil Foden back after his bout with Covid so they won’t be weakened too much by the Algerian’s time away at AFCON.

Chelsea have been weakened by AFCON as Edouard Mendy is away with Senegal and despite the fact that their backup goalkeeper cost £70mil, Kepa is simply a level below what a team aiming the Premier League title. The Blues are in a funk in the Premier League as well, and that has played a big part in them failing to keep up with City. Following the first game between the sides this season, a 1-0 win for City at Stamford Bridge, the Londoners ran off four straight wins but since that run ended they have won only four of their last 11 games. Their issues have been largely in attack, with Romelu Lukaku failing to find his best form after his big money move from Inter Milan. Tuchel has set Chelsea up to be a defensive team, and needs Lukaku and the rest of his attacking players to find form to avoid a trophy-less season. A win against City is a must if Chelsea want to stay in the title race.

⚽ Tottenham Hotspur vs Arsenal
📅 Sunday 16 January 2022
⏰ 1630 UK Kick-Off
🖥️ Sky Sports Live Streaming

The North London Derby is one of the biggest games in English football and this Sunday’s edition will be the first for Spurs manager Antonio Conte who remains unbeaten in Premier League matches since replacing Nuno Espirito Santo in November.

Five wins and three draws under Conte have seen Spurs climb back into the top four race, closing the gap on their North London rivals in the process. Heading into Sunday’s game, Spurs are currently just two points behind Arsenal while also holding two games in hand. Victory over the Gunners would put them in a strong position heading into the second half of their season, with Conte also looking to add new faces this month. While Harry Kane has started to score goals of late, the England captain is still nowhere close to his normal level. It is unlikely that he will play out the whole season without finding his best form at some point, and that is a promising sign for Tottenham. The 3-1 defeat to Arsenal at the Emirates marked the beginning of the end for Nuno, and Spurs won’t want to lose both games against their biggest rivals, especially as it will badly damage their chances of finishing in the Champions League places.

That win over Spurs back in September was the first time Arsenal didn’t look like a relegation contender this season and provided a springboard for them to launch their top four challenge. After unconvincing wins over Norwich and Burnley, the game against Tottenham was the first time that Mikel Arteta’s team really clicked into gear and showed what they could be capable of. Their first performance in the first 40 minutes was absolutely outstanding, but there were worrying signs in the second half as they allowed Spurs back into the game and relied on some good fortune to hold onto the win. Arsenal do have some concerns over the fitness of Tomiyasu, Smith Rowe and Odegaard which could seriously harm their ability to open up an Antonio Conte defence.
