There’s still a bit of shuffling to be done for Europa League and Europa Conference League spots with West Ham, Liverpool, Tottenham and Everton all in the mix but at least two of those clubs would likely rather miss out on Europe altogether than face Thursday night schleps around the darker recesses of Europe playing against teams that sound like brands of toothpaste or beer.
There are three weeks worth of games left though, with eight games taking place this weekend and with the pressure almost entirely off most teams they can now play with a bit more freedom and less fear. Dyche-Ball vs Bielsa-Ball. There are no two managers in the Premier with more contrasting styles of football who get more out of their players than Sean Dyche and Marcelo Bielsa. Dyche has worked continuous miracles at Burnley, once again securing survival despite the complete lack of financial backing he received in the summer while Bielsa’s work at Leeds has seen them secure a comfortable spot in midtable in their first season back in the Premier League.
Burnley’s season won’t please Dyche, not after last season’s top half finish, but considering his only summer addition was Dale Stephens and Burnley had serious injury issues early in the season along with a terrible start that was matched only by Sheffield United, he has done a tremendous job to have them safe with three games to go. Burnley face a big summer with uncertainty over their managers future, big question marks over the new ownership and their willingness, and ability, to invest in the team and interest from top half clubs in the likes of Nick Pope, James Tarkowski, Chris Wood and Dwight McNeil. Perhaps Dyche will be able to convince those players to stay, and the owners to invest, with a little mini run of wins to end the season.
Robbie Brady is unlikely to play again this season while Kevin Long remains sidelined with a heel problem.
Leeds will be thrilled with their season, though Bielsa will still crave more. That craving is what should see him stay next season, his fourth at Leeds – the most he’ll ever have spent at a club side. He’s building something at Leeds, and it will take a couple more years to complete. The spine of a very promising team is there for next season and beyond with Illan Meslier, Robin Koch, Diego Llorente, Kalvin Phillips, Raphinha and Patrick Bamford, along with a bunch of quality players who’s versatility has allowed Bielsa to deploy them whereever he needs them week to week. He appears to have total buy-in from the players, and there appears to be no big egos. Everyone understands that the squad is the real star, even if Raphinha and Phillips stand out above the rest. 10th is likely as high as Leeds can finish, but that in itself would be a great achievement as a newly promoted side.
Adam Forshaw and Helder Costa are ruled out for Leeds while Liam Cooper is a doubt with a sore backside.

West Ham fans are rightly livid with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s decision to play a vastly weakened team against Leicester, but recent defeats to Newcastle and Everton have cost West Ham there spot in the top four more than anything that happened at Old Trafford on Tuesday. There’s still a Europa League place to play for, and perhaps an outside chance that Chelsea or Leicester could slip up and let them back into the mix so they have to keep getting results.
Brighton have had a disappointing second season under Graham Potter, with their inability to score goals hampering their ability to get results which matched their performances on the field. With safety secured thanks to Fulham’s defeat to Burnley, Potter can now begin to experiment a bit and hopefully we’ll see him play more of the young talent, like Alexis Mac Allister and Michael Karbownik, that he has at his disposal rather than relying on some of the older players who have been empty shirts all season long. Potter, lauded last season for implementing a completely new style of play at Brighton, has seen his reputation take a hit this time around. Next season will be big for him, he can get things started early by experimenting over the next three games.
Brighton will be without Lewis Dunk and Neal Maupay who are serving suspensions for being idiots against Wolves, Tariq Lamptey, Solly March and Florin Andone are ruled out with injury, while Adam Lallana and Joel Veltman are doubtful.
The Hammers have had a few days to lick their wounds after a disappointing performance and result against Everton, who should really have put another couple past them. West Ham have fallen flat a few times this season when the pressure has been on but with their Champions League hopes fading perhaps we’ll see more of the good West Ham. They team who have been the surprise package of the season and far exceeded any expectations that were placed on them at the start of the season. David Moyes should be the runaway contender for Manager of the Year after the brilliant job he’s done in turning around a club that seemed destined for the Championship. A strong finish to the season and he can go demanding a new contract.

This game could well be meaningless as Liverpool have to play Manchester United at Old Trafford on Thursday night and defeat there would end any sliver of hope the Reds hold for a top four finish but if, and it’s a capital I and F IF they could pull off a surprise result they could still potentially overhaul Leicester if the Foxes were to slip up and lose one or both of their final games. Defeat to United would mean they would need Leicester to lose their last two while they win their last three and hope that goal difference works out in their favour.
The Baggies are done. Relegated. The first time in Sam Allardyce’s career that he has suffered relegation from the top flight though he will point to the fact that he didn’t take over until December. The truth of the matter is that their terrible run of form after he took over, just five points taken from his first 10 games in charge, was the biggest factor in their relegation. Their form since mid February has generally been quite good, winning three and drawing five while losing only four. If they had found that form straight after Sam’s arrival, maybe they could have survived. Hammerings against Aston Villa, Leeds, Arsenal and Manchester City contributed to them having the worst defensive record in the league, something they did fix later in the season but too late too make a difference. The Baggies did have some joy in their poor run under Sam, with a win over Wolves and a draw at Anfield providing some joy amid the gloom of a season in which they never ventured out of the bottom four.
Branislav Ivanovic and Robert Snodgrass have been ruled out once again for WBA but aside from those two they will be at full strength.
Liverpool can no longer refer to themselves as Premier League Champions and while that will no doubt hurt, they’ve known this moment was coming for months. Their form collapsed after Christmas, beginning with that draw at home to the Baggies. Injuries to central defenders, being forced to play Fabinho in defence and indefensible decisions by Jurgen Klopp all contributed to a weak title defence. Following Chelsea’s defeat to Arsenal they have a chance of gaining a place in the Champions League but much will depend on their result against Manchester United. It is in their own hands but they have constantly fallen flat when given such opportunities this season. Their form over the past six games is the best in the league but late goals conceded to Leeds and Newcastle cost them four valuable points that would have had them in a much stronger position heading into this weekend.
Virgil Van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip won’t feature again this season and have been joined on the sidelines by Ozan Kabak and Ben Davies. James Milner and Naby Keita are doubts for this game, while Jordan Henderson has finally been ruled out for the season after weeks of rumours about his fitness. Divock Origi is back in training though, whether that’s a good thing or a bad thing remains to be seen.
