Two of the most aesthetically pleasing sides in the Premier League meet this Saturday as Leicester travel south to take on Brighton. Both teams are going through difficult spells, but for very different reasons. Leicester have suffered a raft of injuries at the worst possible time and having spent the entire season so far in the top four, they face a very difficult couple of months with players on the sidelines and tough games coming up. Brighton’s issues are largely self created. They’ve been good defensively and extremely creative going forward but their failure to buy a striker last summer has seen them miss countless chances this season and drops in games they should have won week after week.
Back to back defeats in games they dominated boils down to their inability to put the ball in the back of the net. They absolutely battered Crystal Palace but lost 2-1 to a late Christian Benteke goal after barely allowing Palace a kick of the ball. They contrived to lose 1-0 to West Brom last time out, and while a terrible refereeing performance by Lee Mason played a part they can’t blame anyone but themselves for missing two penalties without forcing the keeper to save either. Those two defeats brought to an end an impressive six game unbeaten run that including victories at home to Spurs and away to Liverpool. With Fulham much improved, the Seagulls will be looking over their shoulder and need to start getting more points on the board.
Tariq Lamptey has suffered a setback in his recovery from a hamstring issue and again joins Solly March, Florin Andone and Adam Webster as being ruled out, while Aaron Connolly faces a late fitness test on his back problem.
Leicester’s form was also very good up until the last two games were they turned in poor performances, first in a 3-1 home defeat to Arsenal and then in a 1-1 draw away to Burnley that was only possibly because of Kasper Schmeichel’s heroics. The Foxes will have memories of their second half collapse last season, where they snatched a Europa League spot from the jaws of certain Champions League qualification. Given the collapse of Liverpool and Tottenham, Arsenal being in a rebuild and Chelsea having changed managers mid-season, there really is no excuse if they repeat that horrendous end to the season that torpedoed their top 4 finish last campaign.
The Foxes have been decimated by injuries, with recent long term injuries to James Justin and Harvey Barnes coming as hammer blows given the two youngsters have been Leicester’s best players this season. Wes Morgan, Ayoze Perez, Dennis Praet and James Maddison are also absent, while Jonny Evans is a major doubt with Rodgers going as far to say he was looking more towards the game with Sheffield United as a return date for the Northern Ireland centre-back.

The Manchester Derby pits first vs second but this should not be viewed as a title showdown, rather a tough test for City on their march to a certain third title in four years. We all need to be honest and accept that the title is done and dusted, the result of this game won’t influence it at all but it should still be entertaining viewing if only because of the calibre of football that City play.
15 Premier League wins in a row. 21 wins in a row across all competitions. Unbeaten in their last 28 games across all competitions. Playing incredible football with multiple players displaying player of the year form. Manchester City look pretty much untouchable right now. It’s not just that they’re winning so many games in a row either, it’s the manner in which they’re doing it. They’re suffocating the opposition with their pressure, without ever really looking like they’re being pushed to the limits of their own capabilities. There’s match winners all over the pitch, but there’s not really been an urge to just destroy teams on the scoreline. “2-0 and let’s go home and relax” has often been the way. West Ham and Wolves have caused them some scares in recent games and that’s the first time anyone has really laid a glove on them. City showed a Champions resolve to win both games though, and the run continues.
City have been largely quite fortunate with injuries this season, and Nathan Ake is their only absentee heading into Derby weekend.
United remain second in the league despite only three wins in their last eight games, and one in their last five. Each of those wins came against poor sides in terrible form. Back to back 0-0 draws have highlighted United’s issues of having any attacking player bar Bruno who’s capable of winning a game for them. Fernandes has 15 goals and 11 assists in the league this season. Out of the rest of the squad, only Marcus Rashford, with nine, has more than six goals in the league and only Rashford, with eight, has more than five assists. The worst kept secret in the Premier League is that if you stop Bruno, you stop United. The second worst kept secret is that Ole parks the bus against the top teams. United’s record against the rest of the big six this season is dreadful, they’ve played seven, lost two and drawn five. They’ve only scored one goal, in their 6-1 hammering at the hands of Spurs.
The Red Devils continue to be without long term absentee Phil Jones, who’s joined on the sidelines by Paul Pogba and Juan Mata. David DeGea missed the game against Crystal Palace for an undisclosed reason and there’s been no word on whether he will be available this weekend, while Donny Van De Beek and Anthony Martial face fitness tests ahead of the Derby.

I trust you’ve just come to accept that Leeds United will always feature here and that you should given in and become Apostles in the Church of Bielsa? No? This will be a very tough test for Bielsa’s men as they take on a West Ham team who, after beating Leeds at Elland Road, have lost only lost three of their last fifteen league matches. West Ham have only lost seven games all season, only two of which came against teams who did not finish in the top four last season and those were their first two games of the season. The Hammers are undoubtedly the most improved team this season and David Moyes is surely in the running for manager of the year. They defeat to Manchester City at the weekend ended a nice little four match unbeaten run where they took 10 points from 12 available and kept them on course to secure a European spot for next season. They’ll be looking to get back to winning ways this weekend.
West Ham are feeling the pinch with injuries at the minute, with Arthur Masuaku, Angelo Ogbonna and Andriy Yarmolenko all ruled out, and major doubts over Lukas Fabianski and Darren Randolph creating a bit of a goalkeeping crisis. Ryan Fredericks faces a late fitness test.
Leeds have been inconsistent all season long in terms of results. That’s completely understandable for a newly promoted team and makes their comfortable position in midtable all the more impressive. What hasn’t been inconsistent is their style of play, their effort and desire, and the sheer lunacy of Bielsa-ball. Whether it’s the 4-1-4-1 or the 3-3-3-1, Leeds play at an insanely high tempo with man to man marking all over the pitch when out of possession, and overloads galore in possession. Raphinha is one of the most exciting players to come into the league in recent years and is capable of winning games by himself, but hopefully some of his teammates can step up to the plate to help him, and Patrick Bamford, find ways to win more games.
Bielsa will once again have to do without the services of Adam Forshaw, Gaetano Berardi, Ian Poveda and Robin Koch but there does look to be some good news as Kalvin Phillips, Rodrigo and Jamie Shackleton could all return this weekend.
