At time of writing, Manchester United have just lost at home to rock bottom Sheffield United. The Blades had managed only 5 points from their first 19 games, but somehow managed to take all 3 at Old Trafford against the team sitting second in the table, who’ve been in excellent form since their Champions League exit. Pickford cost his team the win over Leicester, but in truth Leicester were more than worthy of their draw and will probably be disappointed not to have won a game that they dominated.
There’s one game left in this round of games, Tottenham vs Liverpool. Neither team will be happy with their current league position and both will know that a win is crucial to push them back into the top 4 and keep in touch with City, United and Leicester.

They’ve finally found a creative tandem in Emile Smith Rowe and Bakayo Saka, with Arteta finally seeing sense and playing the two brilliant youngsters together in attack. With Alexandre Lacazette upfront and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang or Nicolas Pepe on the left, the two academy graduates are thriving when it comes to creating chances for their high profile teammates. The return of Thomas Partey in midfield has given the Londoners a real platform to play from, with the Ghanaian midfielder beginning to show the form that prompted Arsenal to spend £50mil on him in the summer.
Arsenal head into the weekend with doubts over Smith-Rowe, Partey, Kieran Tierney, Pablo Mari and Dani Ceballos. All will have fitness tests so the Gunners may be at full strength bar the absent Aubameyang who has been granted time away from the team to care for his mother who is currently suffering from ill health.
United have won three of their last five games, drawing one and losing tonight’s game against Sheffield United. Results wise, they could have had no complaints leading into the Blades game but their performances had not been particularly good. They were very fortunate to beat Burnley and Fulham, and weren’t very good against Liverpool either. It’s not a coincidence that Bruno Fernandes’ dip in form has coinciding with United’s performances taking a turn for the worse. The Portuguese midfield has been carrying this team for most of the past 12 months, and it’s only natural that he would eventually go through a bad patch. United could really do with some of their other big name stars stepping up on a consistent basis.
The Red Devils only real potential absentee for the weekend is Eric Bailly who continues to have terrible luck with injuries. Brandon Williams, Phil Jones, Marcus Rojo and Facunda Pellistri are ruled out but none of them would have played anyway.

Arguably the two most enjoyable teams to watch in the Premier League this season will face off on Sunday afternoon as Marcelo Bielsa takes his Leeds team to the King Power to take on the 3rd placed Foxes. Brendan Rodgers has done a fantastic job this season, shaking off the disastrous second half of last season and has his team well positioned to make top four this season. Newly promoted Leeds have been a breath of fresh air to the Premier League with their aggressive attacking style of play, and the epic Bielsa press conferences.
Leicester are unbeaten in their last five games, with three wins and two draws, and will likely feel disappointed not to have won all five. They dominated Everton tonight, and the other draw came away to Crystal Palace when Rodgers rotated heavily as he sought to handle the hectic Christmas schedule. Leicester’s first 11 is as good as almost anybody in the league, and with Caglar Soyuncu and Ricardo Pereira both back to fitness Rodgers will be feeling confident about the second half of this season. The Foxes will be without top scorer Jamie Vardy and midfielder Dennis Praet this weekend, and could also be forced to make do without midfield lynchpin Wilf Ndidi who was forced off at Goodison Park through injury.
There’s just no real way to predict a result in a Leeds United game. They’re just far too mental. They are great going forward, poor defensively, hopeless on set pieces and incredibly hard working. With three wins and two defeats in their last five, they’ve shown multiple sides to themselves, and none of them are predictable. They do seem to have struck gold with the signing of Raphinha from Stade Rennais in the summer, and his link ups with Rodrigo have added a new layer to their attacking quality and will be a problem for any team trying to cope with them.
Robin Koch and Diego Llorente, they two big money summer signings who were expected to form a new central defensive pairing for Leeds are both ruled out this weekend. Koch had surgery in early December and isn’t expected back until around early March, while Llorente had just returned from an injury that had caused him to miss the majority of the season to date and is now injured again. Adam Forshaw and Gaetano Berardi remain long term absentees.

Nobody, not even the most optimistic of Hammers fans, would have predicted that David Moyes would have this team in 4th place on January 27th. They will enter the weekend in 5th place, which is a stark contrast to most predictions as to how their season would pan out. Liverpool will enter this game in 4th or 6th depending on how their game against Spurs goes on Thursday night, and again that’s not something people would have predicted, but for very different reasons.
The Hammers have won their last four games in a row and are unbeaten in their last six. They’ve found a real groove, and a system that works for them as long as Michail Antonio is fit. The midfield partnership of Tomas Soucek and Declan Rice is the foundation that Moyes has built the team on, and they’ve been rock solid defensively and very productive in attack. With Jarrod Bowen teaming with the creative duo of Said Benrahma and Pablo Fornals behind Antonio, West Ham have a great mixture of pace, guile and power in attack. There are still major questions marks over their defense but thus far it’s held up and Moyes will hope it continues to do so because it doesn’t look like any new defenders will be arriving in this transfer window.

Heading into their game with Spurs, Liverpool’s last five Premier League games does not make enjoyable reading for the Reds, three draws and two defeats. Worse still is who those games have come against, with their defeats coming at the hands of Southampton and Burnley, while they dropped points away to Newcastle and at home to West Brom and Manchester United. Before the season began, Liverpool would have expected to win each and every one of those games. The Reds now have a very difficult run of games that starts with Spurs on Thursday and runs right through until the second Merseyside Derby of the season. Not ideal for a team in such poor form.
No team has suffered as much bad luck on the injury front this season as Liverpool, but there is some good news as Joel Matip and Jordan Henderson as expected back for this game. Naby Keita and Diogo Jota remain weeks away from a return while Virgil Van Dijk and Joe Gomez won’t be seen until next season.
