The Premier League returns to your stadiums and screens this weekend after what has been an action packed summer with Euro 2020, the Copa America and the Olympics dominating the months since Manchester City were crowned Premier League Champions for a fifth time. With new £100million signing Jack Grealish added to their ranks in a British record transfer, City will enter the new season as favourites to retain their title. They will face stiff competition from 19/20 Champions Liverpool, reigning Champions League holders Chelsea who have been boosted by the £97million arrival of Romelu Lukaku and their local rivals Manchester United, who have added Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane to their ranks for a combined £115million. We welcome Norwich and Watford back into the Premier League mix after a single season spent in the Championship and will also see Brentford grace the Premier League for the first time. The West London outfit will replace Fulham as local rivals to Chelsea and hope that their analytics based approach to recruitment and team-building sees them enjoy the same level of success as Brighton, who employ a very similar approach.
The Liberty Shield Premier League preview returns to whet your appetite with our pick of the three games that you have to watch this weekend.
⚽ Brentford vs Arsenal
📅 Friday 13 August 2021
⏰ 2000 UK Kick-Off
🖥️ Sky Sports Live Streaming
Why not start with the first game of the season, and the first time Brentford will take the field in a Premier League game. Their wonderful Brentford Community Stadium is yet to host a game with a full capacity of fans having only opened last season, and while it won’t be completely full for Friday nights game it will represent the biggest crowd to attend a game there.
Brentford have not made sweeping changes thus far this summer, adding only central defender Kristoffer Ajer from Celtic, defensive midfielder Frank Onyeka from sister club Midtjylland and tricky winger Yoane Wissa to their ranks. Much of the goalscoring burden will land on the shoulders of Ivan Toney, who set the Championship ablaze last season with 31 league goals in 45 appearances. Joining him in attack will be the talented but inconsistent Bryan Mbeumo, the last remaining member of the famed BMW front three that included Said Benrahma and Ollie Watkins. If those two hit the ground running and the new boys settle in straight away, Brentford will give themselves a fighting chance this season.
Heading into the weekend key midfielders Josh DaSilva and Mathias Jensen are both ruled out for Brentford causing Thomas Frank some headaches in the middle of the park.
Arsenal are hoping to overcome back to back disappointing campaigns and get themselves back into the mix for Champions League contention this year. They have not been shy of spending money over the last four years, but unfortunately they have not spent it well. They’ve made sensible squad signings in Nuno Taveres, who should provide cover for Kieran Tierney at left back, and Albert Lokonga who will add competition in midfield. The pair arrived for a combined £25million, but Arsenal topped that up to a £75million summer spent with a £50million move for Ben White who arrives from Brighton. Whether that proves a good move, only time will tell. But White needs to improve the defensive side of his game if he is to live up to that price tag.
Arsenal have major absences at centre back with Gabriel ruled out, and in midfield with Thomas Partey having suffered ankle ligament damage in a recent friendly. Eddie Nketiah is also set to miss out but Arsenal do have plenty of other options in attack. Rob Holding will face a late fitness test that is all the more important given the Gabriel injury.
⚽ Manchester United vs Leeds United
📅 Saturday 14 August 2021
⏰ 1230 UK Kick-Off
🖥️ BT Sport Live Streaming
One of the great rivalries in English football is renewed in the early game on Saturday as Leeds travel to Manchester in the clash of the Uniteds. Last seasons games between these sides were drastically different with the Red Devils winning the first of them 6-2 before the sides played out a 0-0 in the return leg.
Manchester United enter Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s third full season in charge with a lot of pressure on their backs. It’s been eight years since their last Premier League title, an eternity for a club who won 13 of the previous 21. Last seasons 2nd place was something of a step forward but whether that league placing was down to their own improvement or the regression of Chelsea and the injury plagued nature of Liverpool’s season remains to be seen. Jadon Sancho is in the door, 12 months later than hoped, and Raphael Varane is just waiting to be announced. That announcement may not come in time for him to make his debut this weekend but he’s another long term target that United have managed to secure. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will face major individual pressure to challenge for the title this season, especially after receiving such financial backing and a new contract.
The Red Devils got quite lucky with injuries last season but start this season with a bit of an injury crisis. Marcus Rashford is ruled out after shoulder surgery, Alex Telles is out with an ankle issue, Dean Henderson is still dealing with the after effects of Covid and the injury that forced him to miss Euro 2020, Jesse Lingard is also out with Covid and Raphael Varane isn’t yet registered to play. Jadon Sancho, Edinson Cavani and Eric Bailly are yet to take part in full training after their summer excursions and Phil Jones is, of course, a doubt with injury.
There aren’t many tougher tasks for Ole and his boys to start the season with than a visit from Marcelo Bielsa’s high octane Leeds United. Leeds have carried on last season’s transfer strategy of buying players for now, and players for the long term but one would imagine they had hoped to have more players in the door that would offer immediate help as they look to build on a brilliant first season back in the big time. Along with securing Jack Harrison on a permanent deal from Manchester City and a new backup goalkeeper in Kristofffer Klaesson, the only other senior addition is Spanish left back Junior Firpo who arrives from Barcelona. There’s still time left this summer and one would imagine that Victor Orta is working overtime trying to secure some more new additions to aid Bielsa’s quest to take Leeds back into European competition.
Leeds will be without Diego Llorente who picked up a minor knee injury, and Adam Forshaw who continues a long slow recovery from a serious hip injury. Aside from those though, Marcelo Bielsa will have a full compliment available to him this weekend.
⚽ Tottenham Hotspur vs Manchester City
📅 Sunday 15 August 2021
⏰ 1630 UK Kick-Off
🖥️ Sky Sports Live Streaming
The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium will play host to the most anticipated game of the weekend, though with Harry Kane still a Tottenham player the game has lost a little bit of its potential luster. The Kane to City rumours have been one of the storylines of the summer, fed by Kane giving interviews on golf courses, then going on strike for a week and then lying about going on strike. City manager Pep Guardiola has, of course, pretended that his club aren’t the most cash rich entity in sports by continuing to claim that City can’t afford big money transfers after they just dropped £100million on Jack Grealish.
Spurs have faced the distraction of the Kane rumours and the circus that surrounded their search for a new manager and their preparation for the new season has been less than ideal. New manager Nuno Espirito Santo was nobody’s first choice for the job but he is an experienced, proven commodity who has done well in the Premier League before. He will be to call on new signing Cristian Romero, voted the best defender in Serie A last season, a potential new starting goalkeeper in Pierluigi Gollini and eventually a new winger in Bryan Gil who arrived from Sevilla. He also still has Kane at his disposal for now. So expectations are high. Tottenham strive to be a top four club and have the squad to be just that. Last season was an unmitigated disaster under Jose Mourinho and Nuno will be under no illusions with regards to what is expected from him and his team. If he wants to ensure that the team still has Harry Kane at the end of the transfer window, a good result in week one is an absolute must.
Kane is a doubt for this game, having had to quarantine following his strike and therefore missing out on valuable training time with team-mates he may well be too ashamed to face. Gil is unlikely to feature following a late return from the Olympics and Ryan Sessegnon is ruled out with a thigh injury. Tanguy Ndombele and Romero will both have late fitness tests.
The Champions come to town full of confidence and with their new £100million toy in hand. Jack Grealish is going to experience pressure and expectation unlike anything he’s ever known, carrying the weight of his price tag and the mantle and the tag of being the most expensive player in the history of English football. He’s going to have to do it while adapting to a new role, in a new system and no longer being the fulcrum for everything as he was at Aston Villa. He’ll be expected to work far hard off the ball, to be more switched on defensively and to fit into a system, rather than the system being designed to fit him. He’ll also realise that the standards at Manchester City, who expect to win everything every year, are far higher than those he’s experienced at Villa. None of this is his fault, that’s just the nature of the beast.
Grealish will also have to carry the creative load to begin the season as both Phil Foden and Kevin DeBruyne have been ruled out of the opening weeks of the season. City will also be without the services of youngster Liam Delap
These are just three of the ten games available to you this weekend in the Premier League, however unlike last season the games are not being staggered so the option of watching them all live no longer exists. You can watch these six live if you want, starting with Brentford vs Arsenal, then the battle of the United’s, Liverpool vs Norwich in the late Saturday kick-off and both Sunday games, but you’ll be forced to chose just one of the five 3pm Saturday afternoon kickoffs. It will be interested to see if all those who spent last season moaning about their being too much football on, change their tunes when they have less options this season.
