Premier League 2020-21 Season – Match Week 12 Preview with Liberty Shield VPN

Things are really starting to pick up as we approach the crucial Christmas period. Premier League matches are shown by pay-TV broadcasters Sky Sports, BT Sport, Amazon Prime and with match highlights available free on BBC Sport with Match of the Day. Need a Premier League VPN?

The first round of midweek games follows this weekend and with teams facing five matches apiece between now and the turn of the year every game becomes even more crucial. A couple of key wins could see a team climb from lower mid-table into the European spots, or alternatively a couple of defeats could see them drop the other way.

With only 10 points separating Spurs and Liverpool at the top of the table and 14th placed Leeds United, the parity in the league this season has been quite striking. It’s unlikely to remain as tightly bunched, especially with games about to come thick and fast, but in a season that has become infamous for shock wins and shock score lines, Aston Villa 7-2 Liverpool anyone?, it’s impossible to predict which teams will break away and which will fall behind.

The group at the bottom of the table, Sheffield United, West Brom, Burnley and Fulham, and to an extent Brighton as well, know that it’s now or never to get themselves out of the hole they’ve dug for themselves. If Sheffield United’s dreadful form were to carry over into the New Year, they may as well pack up their tents and get ready for life in the Championship. They, and those around them, will all be aware that they need to start winning games.

There’s an interesting round of games this weekend and here at Liberty Shield we’ve once again decided to preview three of them that you might wish to watch.

The Manchester Derby. One of the biggest games in English football. Over the past decade these games have generally been contested between two teams challenging for the title, this season it’s a battle of 6th and 7th with neither team likely to be happy with their early season performances and form. The managers are polar opposites in terms of past success, reputation and job security but that type of thing goes out the window in a Derby match. United still view City as upstart annoyances more than anything, while City look at United as the Big Bad Wolf that they no longer fear. These games tend to be tight, hard fought affairs but tense games often make good watching.

Fresh off major Champions League disappointment, and renewed talk about his future, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer leads his men into this game having overseen wins in three of his five Derbies as manager. Last season United won both league matches as well as the second leg of the League Cup semi-final. Ole could do with another Derby win to ease the pressure, and his team could use it as a confidence boost. Though United sit 6th in the Premier League table, they have impressed nobody this season and can only point to Everton away as a fixture in which they played well for 90 minutes. In their last two outings, against Southampton and West Ham, they have been completely outplayed in the first halves and relied on second comebacks to claim wins.

A few weeks ago United had one of the worst injury lists in the league but this weekend only Edinson Cavani and Phil Jones are ruled out, though there are major doubts of Anthony Martial’s availability as well.

City haven’t been impressive this season either. Wins over relegation contenders Burnley and Fulham have enabled them to jump to 7th in the table but Guardiola won’t be happy with his team having dropped points in five games already. Consider that in their title winning seasons of 17/18 and 18/19, they dropped points in only six games each season and you’ll see that the drop off that saw them drop points on 12 occasions is very much still there. The return to fitness of Sergio Aguero, who grabbed a goal against Marseille in the Champions League, will provide a huge boost. Aguero has missed eight games this season and while Guardiola has ruled out the possibility of him starting, knowing you have a man who has scored 180 goals in 265 Premier League games available off the bench will give City confidence.

City have had their share of injuries this season, but heading into the weekend the only doubt is Eric Garcia who faces a late fitness test.

⚽ Everton vs Chelsea

Two weeks after facing the manager he experienced his biggest progression under, Frank Lampard comes face to face with another of his former managers. Carlo Ancelotti led Lampard and Chelsea to a Premier League and FA Cup double in 09/10 with Lampard scoring an incredible 26 goals from midfield. Carlo is the manager Lampard played under with whom he shares the most characteristics, both in terms of their respective playing careers and their managerial styles. The two only worked together for two years but it was clear they clicked brilliantly, and this represents another good measuring stick for Lampard.

After their brilliant start to the season, Everton have crashed back to earth with four losses in their last six games. Suspensions to Richarlison and Lucas Digne, followed by Digne’s injury, derailed them as they lost their main wide creators. Though it’s James Rodriguez who pulls the strings, the final ball of Lucas Digne was key to Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s brilliant start to the season. Without the marauding left back Everton have been forced to find different avenues of creativity and thus far none have worked consistently. A fortunate win over Fulham represents their only victory in their last seven outings so Carlo will need to change things up in order to overcome Chelsea.

Everton have a number of injuries at present, with Digne being the biggest loss to the team. Fabian Delph, Jean-Phillipe Gbamin, Seamus Coleman and Robin Olsen will also be missing for the visit of the Londoners.

Chelsea sit third in the table, and are enjoying a strong run of form in Premier League and Champions League competition. Four wins from their last five, with the outlier being a dull 0-0 draw with Spurs, have put Chelsea in a very strong position after 11 games. Though the level of competition hasn’t been the strongest they can only beat what’s put in front of them. Despite some major question marks over their defensive structure and personnel, they have managed to tighten things up significantly in recent weeks. It will be interesting to see how Thiago Silva deals with the physicality and movement of Calvert-Lewin and that battle could determine the outcome.

No team has been luckier with injuries this season than Chelsea, though Hakim Ziyech and Callum Hudson-Odoi both picked up injuries in midweek that will rule them out for a couple of weeks.

⚽ Leicester City vs Brighton
📅  Sunday 13 December 2020
⏰ 1915 UK Kick-Off
🖥️ Amazon Prime Live Streaming

There isn’t a marquee game on Sunday, but this game should be very good on the eye with both teams keen to play entertaining exciting football. Brendan Rodgers and Graham Potter are managers who have built their reputations playing possession based attacking football. Neither want their teams to follow the model of a Sam Allardyce or Tony Pulis. Both are likely to scold their players for playing long ball football rather than encourage it.

Leicester sit 4th in the Premier League with 21 points from their 11 games. Seven wins so far have seen The Foxes bounce back into the battle for a Champions League spot after their terrible second half in the 2019/20 season. They have lost four games, and Rodgers will be aware that they can’t afford to continue to lose one in three but as long as they continue to rack up wins rather than draws he’ll be comfortable with their overall points per game numbers. The Foxes beat Sheffield United last time out with a late Jamie Vardy goal in a game they weren’t at their best in. That came off the back of back-to-back defeats to Liverpool and Fulham so Leicester will want to find their form quickly and take another three points from Sunday’s game.

Leicester’s injury situation has improved in recent weeks but Caglar Soyuncu, Ricardo Pereira and Daniel Amartay are ruled out for this weekend, while Timothy Castagne is a major doubt

Brighton have disappointed on the whole this season and currently sit in 16th position on 10 points from 11 games. They’ve outplayed top teams like Chelsea, Manchester United and Liverpool, but failed to win any and took only one point from those three games. With just one win from their last five, a 2-1 away win over Aston Villa, they won’t be travelling to Leicester in particularly good form. Their failure to add a goalscorer in the summer has hurt them, as have injuries and suspensions to important players.

Adam Lallana, Florin Andone, Jose Izquierdo and Christian Walton are ruled out for Brighton whilst Davy Propper and Alexis Mc Allister will face fitness tests.
