If the Premier League is not to your taste, fear not. There are fantastic games taking place all over Europe with the four other top league all throwing some really entertaining match-ups.

Starting with the Bundesliga, early leaders Hoffenheim travel to Frankfurt to take on an always entertaining Eintracht team who have also made a good start to the season. Hoffenheim, under new boss Sebastian Hoeness, have been really good to watch in the early going with the rookie manager implementing an exciting, attack minded approach.

Last time out, they put champions Bayern Munich to the sword in a 4-1 win. This time, they’ll go up against Adi Hutter and his men. Hutter, formerly of Red Bull Salzburg and Young Boys, has created a very entertaining team since replacing Nico Kovac in 2018, despite losing a number of key players. This game promises exciting football, and goals.

The other must-watch game in the league this season is Bayern Munich, looking to bounce back from that heavy defeat to Hoffenheim, playing host to Hertha Berlin. Both teams have won one and lost one so far, and this game will offer an opportunity for Hertha to make a statement. They’ve shown some ambition in this summer’s transfer market and will want more stability this season after the shenanigans of last season.

Hertha want to make inroads towards becoming one of the Bundesliga’s top teams and giving Germany’s capital a top class team to be proud of, but the Bavarian giants won’t want to be used as stepping stone on that path and will be looking to push Hertha back down the mountain that they alone have stood on top of for the past eight years.

In Serie A defending champions Juventus face Napoli in the marquee game of the weekend. This game sees two close friends and former team-mates face off from opposing dugouts. Napoli, managed by Gennaro Gattuso, have started the season impressively with back to back wins and clean sheets over Parma and Genoa. Kalidou Koulibaly, after a protracted transfer saga involving Manchester City, has decided to stay Napoli and has began this season looking more impressive than ever. His partnership with Kostas Manolas promises to be one of the best in Europe and should form the building block of a very good team.

Juve, under rookie manager Andrea Pirlo, are still trying to find their new identity as Pirlo makes the transition into the biggest job in the land. Defensively they haven’t looked particularly good defensively yet, but have shown signs of being really promising going forward. With a couple of tweaks, and the return of De Ligt from injury, the kinks in the system should be worked out. They’ll need to on top form against Napoli, or Juve’s defense could get exposed by the speed and movement of the Napoli frontline.

In another massive game, Inter Milan travel to Rome to take on Lazio in what should be a very interesting tactical battle. Antonio Conte and Simone Inzaghi are both proponents of using a back 3 but that’s where the comparisons end. Conte’s 3-5-2 is aimed at wearing down the opposition and grinding out wins, whereas Inzaghi’s 3-1-4-1-1 is about spacing, creating as many passing options as possible and looking to be as creative as possible.

The hipsters choice for the weekend has to be Atalanta against Cagliari. Atalanta are one of the most entertaining teams in Europe, scoring goals for fun but conceding at a concerning rate, while Cagliari mesh entertaining football with plenty of bastardry. Gian Piero Gasperini has crafted a team that rarely fail to create excitement when they take the field. When Atalanta are in full flight they really do capture the imagination and should be one everybody’s list of team to watch as often as possible.

Cagliari, who started last season brilliant before things fell apart, will be looking to push for a European spot this season. New manager Eusebio Di Francesco will want to rebuild his reputation following a disastrous spell at Sampdoria that saw him sacked after only eight games, and with the business Cagliari have done this summer they will fancy themselves to go to Bergamo and take at least a point.

In Spain, Valencia vs Real Betis stands out as a very interesting game between two teams that play entertaining football and have made good starts to the season. Many had written Valencia off after the bizarre ongoings that engulfed the club during the summer but Javi Gracia has gotten them dancing to the beat of his drum very quickly and they look formidable.

Barcelona face Sevilla as Ronald Koeman attempts to continue his efforts to turn around the fortunes of the Catalan giants who hit possibly their lowest ebb in the past 20 years during this past summer. The crushing defeat to Bayern, the circus surrounding Lionel Messi and the calamity of their Presidential situation made it a time to forget for the Cules.

Sevilla, after last season’s Europa League success, will be ambitious this season and their transfer window thus far backs that up. They will see this game as an opportunity to test themselves and figure out what this season could hold for them.

Lyon vs Marseille is the headline game in Ligue 1, and both will want to take advantage of PSG’s terrible start to the season and create a real title race this season. Lyon are shrouded in uncertainty as the future of multiple key players is currently up in the air. Marseille have been hit and miss this season but will want to use this game to get their season back on track.

Elsewhere Lille, with their immensely talented young team, are worth a watch as they travel to Strasbourg in a game they should win.

If football isn’t your bag, don’t worry. There’s lots for everyone else too.

In Tennis, the delayed French Open is underway and despite the absence of Roger Federer from the men’s side, and reigning Champions Ashleigh Barty on the women’s side, most of the games top stars are at Roland Garros.

Serena Williams had started the tournament looking like a threat to claim a 24th Grand Slam but an Achilles injury has forced her to withdraw. That should open the tournament up for Simona Halep, Sofia Kenin and Ka Pliskova.

On the men’s side the legendary Novak Djokovic, newly crowned US Open Champion Dominic Thiem and 2015 French Open winner Stan Wawrinka will all be out to stop Rafael Nadal from claiming a 13th French Open, and a record tying 20th overall Grand Slam. Nadal is the undisputed King of Clay and should he health hold out, he will be very hard to beat.

UFC fans can get their fix as Dana White continues to wage war against Covid by running an event pretty much every week, this weekend former Bantamweight Champion Holly Holm takes on Irene Aldana. On the undercard, one to watch for is former interim Welterweight Champion Carlos Condit taking on Court McGee. Condit is on a five fight losing streak and has won only two fights in the last eight years. A defeat to McGee and it’s hard to see how Condit can continue to fight on, at least in the UFC.

There’s a full weekend of action in Rugby this week, Friday and Saturday bring up the first round  games. Defending Champions Leinster play host to the Dragons, while Scarlets against Munster is arguably the tie of the round.

Sunday is the final day of the Gallagher Premiership calendar and though Exeter have already secured the title, their trip to Wasps promises to be an entertaining affair. Elsewhere, Saracens will face Bath and will want to prove a point. Saracens are being relegated due to salary cap manipulation breaches that have seen them docked a staggering 105 points this season. Were it not for that deduction they would sit third in the table. On their way out of the top flight, they will want to leave their old rivals with a parting gift before they undertake the battle of gaining promotion back up from the Greene King IPA Championship.
