There’s a near full round of Premier League games on, so as usual we’ve gone ahead and previewed three for you which can be read right here. This weekend will also see the first proper silverware awarded in England this year, with the EFL Cup Final taking place. There is, of course, a preview which can be read here.
Looking around the rest of the big five leagues, it’s a big weekend in a couple of them with games that could sway the title on offer.
Bundesliga – Wolfsburg vs Borussia Dortmund on Saturday at 2.30pm
Third placed Wolfsburg, a surprise package this summer under Oliver Glasner, will welcome fellow Top 4 hopefuls Borussia Dortmund, currently 5th to the Volkswagon Arena on Saturday knowing that a win would leave them eight points clear of Dortmund and all but certain of a top 4 finish with just three games remaining in the Bundesliga season.
Wolfsburg’s form has been slightly shaky of late with three defeats in their last seven games, but two of those defeats came against Eintract Frankfurt, currently fourth, and Bayern Munich who look set to win a ninth title in a row. Dortmund’s form has been sketchy all season, they’ve largely disappointed in Bundesliga play but three wins on the bounce has at least given them an outside chance of securing a top four spot. Erling Haaland has had a bit of a dip lately so look for him to explode back to life before the season ends.
La Liga – Real Madrid vs Real Betis on Saturday at 8.00pm
Real Madrid are currently second in La Liga, three points behind Atletico and two ahead of Barcelona who have a game in hand. Between the three, and fourth placed Sevilla who sit a point behind Barca but with a game more played, it’s setting up to be a great finish to the La Liga season with six games to play, seven for Barca.
Madrid welcome Real Betis, currently sixth and in a good position to secure Europa League football for next season, to their temporary home of the Alfredo Di Stefano stadium, for a game that could go a long way towards deciding if either of these teams will achieve their domestic goals for the season. With Eden Hazard back in full training, Real have been growing in confidence of late and a run of eight wins and three draws from their last 11 La Liga games has given them a real chance of retaining their title. Betis, for their part, have drawn their last four games in a row and are unbeaten in five. They’re a difficult team to beat, but give them an opportunity to play and they’re a match for anyone.
Ligue 1 – Lyon vs Lille on Sunday at 8.00pm
This match will go a long way towards deciding the tightest title race European football has seen in many years. Only three points separates league leaders Lille from fourth placed Lyon with five games to go. This is by far Lille’s most difficult remaining game, while Lyon have to take on third placed Monaco next weekend.
Lille would likely have the title wrapped up already if their form had held. They’ve dropped points in five of their last nine games to consistently allow the other teams back into the race. The pressure does seem to be weighing on the players, which is no surprise considering none of them have been in this position before with Lille. Like their opponents this weekend, Lyon have dropped points in five of their last nine which will disappoint Rudi Garcia. With so much talent on display, it’s hard to see this game being a boring one.
Serie A – Lazio vs AC Milan – Monday at 7.45pm
The title race in Italy is as good as over, with Inter sitting 10 points clear at the top of the table with just six games remaining. Below them, it’s all to play for. Eight points separate second placed Milan from sixth placed Lazio, but Lazio do have a game in hand. Win this game, and that game in hand, and they’ll be just two points back with five games to play. Atalanta, Juventus and Napoli occupy third, fourth and fifth respectively so both of these teams still have a lot of work to do to secure a place in next seasons Champions League, regardless of the result this weekend.
Lazio missed an opportunity to close the gap to Milan this week. After Milan lost 2-1 at home to Sassuolo, Lazio were humbled 5-2 at the hands of Napoli. After a five match winning run, that result will have been a disappointment for Simone Inzaghi who continues to do a very good job at Lazio in his fifth season in charge of the capital side. Milan led the way in Serie A for much of the season, topping the table for 17 weeks before eventually being overtaken by city rivals Inter. This has been a season of great progression for Milan, but they must secure a place in next season’s Champions League to make it worthwhile.

It’s a massive weekend for Rugby with the launch of an exciting new competition. The Guinness Pro14 Rainbow Cup. It’s the Pro14 we know and love with the addition four South African teams. It’s similar to when the Southern Kings and Cheetahs undertook places in the Pro 14 but this time, it’s the best of the best. The Bulls, The Lions, The Sharks and The Stormers. This season, because of the pandemic, the South African teams will take part in a mini-league among themselves while the 12 European based teams play out a normal season (it has not yet been announced if they will face each other in the playoffs) with the assumption being that from next year we will see a Pro 16 with the South African clubs fully integrated into the league. It’s an exciting time for the competition and the arrival of the four South African powerhouses could give it the right to claim that it’s the strongest competition in world Rugby outside of the Champions Cup.
The first games will take place this weekend, beginning today when the Stormers take on the Sharks at 6pm, followed by Ulster vs Connacht and Edinburgh vs Zebre in an 8.15pm double header. Action continues Saturday with Benetton vs Glasgow at 1pm, the Bulls vs the Lions at 3pm, Ospreys vs Cardiff at 5.15pm and finally Leinster vs Munster at 7.35pm. Dragons vs Scarlets at 1pm is Sunday’s lone fixture. All games will be available on Premier Sport and Eir Sport.
There is also Gallagher Premiership action, with a big game tonight as Bristol take on reigning Champions Exeter at 7.45pm. There’s a full slate tomorrow starting at 12.30pm with London Irish vs Harlequins, and a rare 3pm tripleheader that sees Gloucester vs Newcastle, Leicester vs Northampton and Worcester vs Sale. Just the one game on Sunday, another 3pm kickoff as Wasps host Bath.
That’s not all though, because there’s more on offer from the Women’s Six Nations on Saturday. It’s the final round of matches in this shortened season. First up in the 3rd and 4th placed playoff it’s Ireland vs Italy at noon, followed by the title match between England and France at 2pm. Finally, there’s the 5th and 6th placed playoff it’s Scotland vs Wales at 5pm as both sides look to avoid the Wooden Spoon.

Three titles will be on the line this Saturday Night at UFC 261 as the UFC returns to holding events in front of a packed house. Florida’s continued indifference to the global pandemic has aligned perfectly with Dana White’s views on things and 15,000 people will pack themselves into the Vystar Veterans Memorial Arena in Jacksonville, Florida for the first UFC event infront of a full house in 13 months.
To White’s credit, he has at least put together a stacked crowd as a reward for the fans and even outside of the three title fights, there’s a very strong undercard including a potential fight of the year contender between Uriah Hall and former Middleweight Champion Chris Weidman.
The title fights will rightly get most of the attention and the first of the three is the Women’s Flyweight belt being defending by Valentina Shevchenko, 20-3, who takes on the former Strawweight Champion Jessica Andrade who moved up in weight after losing her title to Zhang Weili and then a rematch with Rose Namajunas, whom she had beaten to take the title from. Andrade is an OG in the women’s divisions of the UFC, spending eight years with the company and heading into what will be her 19th fight with the organisation. The Champion is one of the best to ever do it though, and is currently on a six fight win streak. Her only two defeats in the past decade are both to Amanda Nunes, viewed by many as the greatest female fighter of all time, and many believe that Shevchenko won the second fight between the pair. This will be her fifth title defense and she will hope to be as dominant as she has been in the previous four.
The second title fight sees the two women who defeated Andrade before she moved up in weight face off for the Strawweight title. Former Champion “Thug” Rose Namajunas takes on the phenomenal Zhang Weili who, after losing the first fight of her career, has rattled off 21 straight wins and rarely looked troubled. She’s one of the best fight finishers on the women’s side of the game, with 17 of her wins coming by KO or submission. Thug Rose will not be a pushover though. She’s faced and beaten the unbeatable before, when she defeated the seemingly invincible Joanna Jedrzejczyk to take the title from her. Interestingly Weili beat Jedrzejczyk in her last fight in what was arguably the closest contest of her career to date.
The main event sees the men’s Welterweight title on the line in a rematch between defending Champion Kamaru Usman and BMF Champ Jorge Masvidal. These two met back in February at UFC 258 when Masvidal stepped in at short notice to replace Gilbert Burns who had been forced to pull out due to a positive Covid-19 test. Usman won the fight comfortably but Dana White is giving Masvidal a rematch as a reward for saving that pay-per-view, which is absolutely fair. Usman, 18-1, has looked fantastic in his UFC run and his 17 fight win streak, 13 of which have come in the UFC, has been very impressive in terms of the his dominance over his opponents. Masvidal, also known as Street Jesus, was on the best run of his career before the defeat to Usman having KO’d Darren Till, Baptized Ben Askren and then beaten Nate Diaz for the specially created BMF belt. Whether a full training camp makes much of a difference for Masvidal against Usman remains to be scene but one thing is for sure, Gamebred doesn’t get paid by the round. He’s coming to try and KO the Champ.

Only one real fight of note this weekend as Emanuel Navarette, 32-1-1. puts his WBO Featherweight title on the line against 26-2 Christopher Diaz at the Silver Spurs Arena in Florida on Saturday night. Navarette, the former WBO Junior Featherweight Champion, won the title in his last fight against Ruben Villa. The title had become available after Shakur Stevenson, arguably the best young fighter in the sport, took his talents up to Super Featherweight and vacated the Featherweight belt. Stevenson is one of the two men who have beaten Diaz, who has never lost outside of world title fights but is 0-2 in such contests.
With a combined 43 KO victories between these two, this fight has the potential for fireworks. Navarette is unbeaten in almost nine years and has a substantial reach advantage but Diaz is a tough customer who’s never been stopped so this will likely be a long nights work for both men.

It’s time for the Zurich Classic of New Orleans. This is quite an exciting tournament because it’s a team event, changing to the current format in 2017. It was one of the tournaments that was a casualty of the pandemic last season, but with over $1mil on offer to both winners it’s sure to be highly competitive. 2019 winners Jon Rahm and Ryan Palmer made a good start to this years tournament with a strong first round but sit three shots behind joint leaders Victor Hovland and Kristoffer Ventura, and Scott Stallings and Brice Garnett.

The 2021 World Snooker Championship is well underway at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield and we’re at the second round stage with most of the top names still in the mix. In the first, Ding Junhui and Stephen Maguire were the only two seeded players to fall, though in Junhui’s defense he did lose to former world number two Stuart Bingham who’s won six ranking tournaments so that wasn’t much of an upset. In the second round there’s some excellent matches ahead, with the battle of two former multi-time World Champions John Higgins and Mark Williams arguably the tie of the round. At time of writing there could be a massive upset on the cards though as Ronnie O’Sullivan trails Anthony McGill by 10-6 in the best of 25 match.

Anthony Davis is back from injury, LeBron James is closing in on his return. Once they are back in tandem the defending Champion LA Lakers will likely be seen as the prohibitive favourites to retain their crown but it won’t be easy. The Jazz, the Suns and the Clippers are represent real threats to the Lakers in the Western Conference and the three headed monster of the Sixers, the Nets and Bucks loom large in the East.
There’s plenty of good games scheduled this weekend with the pick of them being:
- Friday: Hawks vs Heat, Nets vs Celtics, Warriors vs Nuggets
- Saturday: Bucks vs Sixers, Heat vs Bulls, Mavericks vs Lakers
- Sunday: Nets vs Suns, Trail Blazers vs Grizzlies, Hawks vs Bucks
